“People with passion change the world.”

-Steve Jobs

Joseph William Deerin

Joseph William Deerin was 68 years young at his death.  He resided in Wrightsville, Pennsylvania overlooking the Susquehanna River and Stuart, Florida on the St. Lucie River.  Joe died early Tuesday morning, January 24, 2012 at his home in Stuart, Florida.  Cause of death was a heart attack.  He did not suffer.  He spent the last day of his life sailing, laughing, and enjoying the sunset with friends and his wife, Pat, with whom he would have celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on January 27, 2012.

Joe was a lover of life.  Born April 25, 1943 in Newark, New Jersey, he was the son of Verna Caroline (Jacob) and Joseph W. Deerin.  Joe grew up in Cliffwood Beach, New Jersey, on the Raritan Bay with his sister Beth (Deerin) Hyland, his dear friend Danny Wall, and his cousin Cathy.  He learned to love the water by taking his little boat out on the Raritan Bay.  Joe was an active participant in life and not a spectator.  He was a tremendous athlete, playing football, baseball, and basketball.  He played baseball and basketball for the Sayreville Bombers and went on to play college basketball at Rider College.

Joe’s first marriage was to Barbara Deerin in 1963 in Sayreville, New Jersey, with whom he had four children.  Joe married the love of his life, Patricia A. (Schwarga) on January 27, 1978 in York, Pennsylvania and added three step-children to his family.  Joe and Pat loved every minute of every day, and lived with passion and zest for life.  He and Pat loved to dance, enjoyed long walks, and loved the outdoors, both in Pennsylvania and Florida. They shared sunrises over the Susquehanna River and sunsets over the St. Lucie River.

Joe graduated from Sayreville High School in Sayreville, New Jersey, and Rider College in Trenton, New Jersey, where he studied real estate and was a member of Zeta Beta Tau.  Joe was a great teacher and mentor who loved to share his knowledge with anyone and everyone. Joe coached his son's York Little League Baseball team to the 1980 Pennsylvania State Championship.

Upon graduation from Rider College in 1964, Joe moved with his family to Stratford, Connecticut, where he worked for the DM Reed Company.  He moved to Pennsylvania in 1970, when he opened an Ethan Allen Furniture store.  He began his real estate career at Coldwell Banker in York in 1984.  In 1985, he and his partner began CRSI, and in 1987 Joe joined the Lanecor Group of Pennsylvania. In 1991, Joe founded LMS Commercial Real Estate and Property Management Alternatives.  He was a tremendous salesman and his zest for life carried over into his work.  In 1995, he met Richard Welkowitz of Blackford development and they went on to develop many successful commercial real estate properties.  He built a company that grew from 5 to nearly 50 people. Last year, LMS was voted one of Pennsylvania’s Best Places to Work and was also selected as the Central Penn Business Journal’s Business of the Year. He was a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers.  Joe treated his employees like family and fostered a great work environment.  His motto was…"Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day.  Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.”

Joe enjoyed spending time with his wife, friends, seven children and fourteen grandchildren.  He loved learning new skills, biking, tennis, sailing, waterskiing, jet skiing, dancing, hiking, and photography.  He enjoyed traveling, art, fine wine, good food and great friends. Even for the most seasoned athlete, it was a challenge to keep up with Joe who was always on the move trying something new or learning how to do it better.  Joe had a way of making everyone feel welcome and believed in giving people a chance.

He was a generous philanthropist, supporting organizations closest to his heart.

Joe had a remarkable wit and great sense of humor.  He loved to laugh, tell stories, and take every opportunity to teach someone how he would have done it...with a smile and a wink from his twinkling blue eyes. He was a great father, husband, brother, grandfather, and friend. Joe will be missed by all.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Patricia A. Deerin of Wrightsville; mother of his children, Barbara A. Deerin of York; children: daughters Cheryll Nicholson and her husband Dave of York; Donna Deerin Ward and her husband Chad of York; Christine Deerin of York; and son, Joseph R. Deerin of Lancaster; stepdaughters, Barbara Boden Tosolini and her husband Neil of Jersey City, NJ; Karen Boden Poulin and her husband William of Sherborn, MA; and stepson Michael Boden and his wife Lindsey of Newtown Square, PA.  Joe has fourteen grandchildren who he loved and guided: Jordan and Samuel Nicholson; Joseph "Ryan" and Megan Fix; Dylan and Ezekiel "Zeke" Ottemiller and Bryce Ward; Joseph “Jake” and David Deerin; William, Ryan and John Poulin; and Piper and Delaney Boden; a sister, Beth Hyland and her husband Bob and their children and grandchildren; his beloved mother-in-law, Olga Schwarga of Columbia, PA; his beloved sister-in law and brother-in-law Marilyn and John Roselli of Barrington, IL and their children and grandchildren and Joe and Pat's dear friends, Bill and Judy Hendrey of Wrightsville, PA., and their children and grandchildren.

A public memorial was held on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at St. Joseph Church, 2935 Kingston Road, York, Pennsylvania, 17402 at 3:00 p.m., with a reception that followed at Chestnut Ridge, 3200 East Prospect Road, York, PA 17402.  The Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E.
